$35 million bet on pro soccer (Las Vegas Sun)
Soccer has provided Paul Caligiuri with some indelible memories, from booting the United States into its first World Cup in 40 years to watching the fall of the Berlin Wall from the other side.

Philemon Masinga scored the goal against Congo in 1997 that took Bafana Bafana to its first FIFA World Cup appearance at France 1998. He was also part of the team that won the African Nations Cup in 1996. Masinga played for Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa and at Leeds United in England.

FIFA Bans High-Altitude International Soccer Matches (Update1) (Bloomberg.com)
May 28 (Bloomberg) — FIFA banned international soccer matches from being played more than 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level, hurting the chances of teams including Ecuador and Bolivia of qualifying for the World Cup.
